It was 2001, and I was enjoying dinner with new friends at a busy restaurant. In a split second, my bag was gone—and my life was dismantled.
I quickly realized my entire bag, containing my wallet, checkbook, and personal identification with my social security, was stolen. The sheer panic I felt is hard to describe. I immediately began calling banks and credit card companies to report the theft, hoping to stop the damage before it started.
However, the thieves were fast. Within hours and first few days, they had already opened new credit lines, cashed checks, and initiated a nightmare that would last for over two decades. Dealing with the aftermath meant endless phone calls, filing police reports, and trying to prove that I was not responsible for the fraudulent activity.
That night was the catalyst for my decades long journey as a victim and, eventually, a passionate advocate for identity protection. It was a harsh lesson that identity theft can happen to anyone, anywhere, in an instant.
I now dedicate my time to helping others share their stories, learn from my experiences, and take proactive steps to protect their identities. Knowledge is power, and by sharing these stories, we can all become smarter and better equipped to prevent fraud.
